Twitter, Inc. twitter app

Twitter, Inc. released a twitter client recently, it is a fair start but has some issues. The biggest annoyance is the fact that it does not keep track of your last read message and return you to that point in the timeline. Other than this, everything works as I would expect. The sync integration is nice but does not make up for the lack of tracking the last message.

I am going to disable the sync for now and watch for updates. I hope the developers listen to the users and look at the features of the other clients out there.

Android 2.1 notes

I have noticed that this version of Android handles wifi better than previous versions. It now consistently connects to our network, this is a big help since t-mobile cannot seem to fix the 3g in this area.

I have not fully explored the bluetooth features yet, but there seem to be improvements here as well.

I posted some wallpapers on my live account, check my live blog for the link.

Update on phone

I am still using an experimental rom for my phone. It is android 2.1 rom based on the hard volunteer work of some great programmers.  There are some minor issues but it is worth the glitches.  I have lost the home screen icons a couple of times; a reboot fixed it.

When it comes out of testing for a few days I will talk to Kelley about installing it on her phone. She will like the updates, but not having to reinstall her programs.

This rom is very nice work and brings nice features to an older phone.

Cyanogenmod Visit this site and check it out if you have a t-mobile G1 or MyTouch it is worth the effort. Read all of the instructions and understand them before you do anything to your phone. There are risks to your phone and it is your responsibility to understand them.

Updated to Android 2.1 on my G1

I just updated to cyanogen's testing rom of 2.1 for the dream. So far it is working ok.  I am checking on my phone before I update Kelley's phone.  I can live with it being a little unstable and know how to revert it on the move.

New computer on the way

I ordered a new tablet pc today. It is a fujitsu lifebook T900 with a dual digitizer. I am looking forward to getting it, and checking it out. I will post a review of it after I work with it for awhile and have a feel for it.

It will have windows 7 professional installed, so that will be an interesting experience.  Everyone that I know that has Windows 7 is better than Vista and way better than XP.

X41T with Vista update

I finally have all of the software I want onto the laptop and it is still faster than it was with XP, the battery life is better than before, and it is more stable. I wish I had done it months ago.

The handwriting detection is much better and the interface is smother.  I like the speech recognition software that is built in, it works well on this older hardware. It would be nice to try it on newer, faster hardware.

Update on Vista on my x41 tablet

I have learned I have to be selective about the gadgets I install on the sidebar. I had one slow the system to a crawl until I removed it.  Office runs fast and smooth on my system now and Vista seems to be better at power management than XP was. I was able to run the system for four hours off the battery browsing the web, using word and onenote, and installing software and updates and got down to 20% battery. I am currently installing service pack 2 for Vista.

I feel it is worth the effort to install Vista onto the Lenovo x41 tablet if you do a clean install.  Be prepared to invest some time in the project and due not start it when you need the computer.

Installing Vista on my X41 Tablet

I have installed Vista onto my laptop. So far I am pleased with it, the system is faster and smother than XP ever was. I am still working on installing the software I need for school and other projects.

I will update when I have everything installed with a report on the performance of the system.

I have already discovered that, though possible, the upgrade path is a bad idea. I ended up with an unstable system that would not maintain a network connection of any kind and other minor issues. They were enough to require a clean install.

It has been a long time since I have done a clean, ground up installation of a system with all the software and had forgotten how long it takes to install all the software and updates.

TweetCaster review

Tweetcaster is an ok twitter app, however it has issues that bother me.First, the ads are poorly placed and very easy to accidently click them. This leads to the other problem, it seems to be to large to stay in memory and takes a while to load and is generally slow. I find these issues to be irritating enough that I am going to uninstall it after I complete this post. I noticed that the developer seems to be routing the ads through their own servers to avoid ad blocking.

T-Mobile data problems continue

I just spoke with customer service again about the data problem at my home and they determined that it is a problem with the cell site. I tried to tell them this a month ago. They have no eta on a fix, it could be days or weeks. This has been going on for over a month and a half now. This is now well past the point of breach of contract on their part and I could get out of the rest of contract, I am wondering if it is time to look at other providers.

Stupid spammers

I had a spammer post a link to his warez site as a comment to my last entry.  From trying to read their post, it was clear that English was not their primary language.

Due to this, I disabled anonymous comment posting and enabled comment moderation.  I did not want to moderate comments on my blog because I wanted to allow a free and open disscussion on the topics I post.

More review of swype on my G1

I have been using swype for android for about a week now and I am pleased with it so far. If you use the on-screen keyboard a lot, it makes entry faster and smoother.

The built in dictionary is large and it is not difficult to add new words. I am not sure how to remove custom words; however, I have not had a need to remove one yet.

I am curious about the price structure for the release version, I am getting used to this text entry system and would not like having to give it up because they set a price point that is out of reason for the product. There is a very large potential customer base for this software and I feel they would make more by selling at a lower price, with more copies sold than a high price and few copies sold.

Overall, this is a nice software package that I would recommend to anyone that has an android based phone.

Thanks to Andrew Spellman for turning me onto this software.

Review of twicca, a twitter app for android

I have been using twicca for a couple of weeks now and feel it could replace Twidroid except for the lack of url shortening.  To me this is a deal breaker due to the inherent length limits with twitter. I will continue to watch it and if they add url shortening, I will look at it again.

Testing swype input method beta

I am testing Swype beta input method for android.  It is very slick so far, just slide your finger over the letters of the word and if it is not sure it gives you several choices.  It also seems to learn as you use it.  I am impressed so far with it.

The ongoing T-Mobile 3G data saga

I just got off the phone with a T-Mobile customer service rep.  I did not have to go through all the normal tests and I have another trouble ticket number in my file.

An engineer from T-Mobile is supposed to contact me within 72 hours to make arrangements to come on site to troubleshoot the problem.  I am not optomistic that they will contact me.

The saga continues....

T-Mobile data problems ongoing

The edge connection has been working at the house for a couple of days now. I waited before reporting this to confirm that it was stable.  The big problem is that I STILL do not have 3G service here.

I have not heard from customer service since last Wednesday and have never heard from an engineer.  Considering that I have been told by customer service reps several times an engineer would contact me, this is becoming a bad joke.  It was this level of failure that convinced me to switch carriers last time.

I is getting really frustrating that they seem to keep trying to blame it on my phone when my wife's phone has the same issue and we both have the same problem inside and outside.  Every time I speak with them, they want me to walk through the same set of troubleshooting steps again, it seems that they are doing the same things over and over expecting different results.

I will follow up with them again today and see if they want me to do their standard troubleshooting again, proving their standard procedure of blaming the customer's equipment.

Still no cellular data with T-Mobile

T-Mobile data still not working at my home. Now at about 40 hours with no working cellular data in this area. This is getting bad, I have no data for my data intense phone outside of wifi range at home.  No data in the yard :-(  I may be looking at new carriers after this contract is up.  http://maps.google.com/?q=39.5938301,-119.842904

T-Mobile data problems

I have been discussing with T-Mobile the fact that I can connect at 3G speed but not transfer any data.  It worked for a month and a half after they turned it up in this area, then stopped.  I have been forcing my phone to 2G/EDGE for a month now to have data service.  This morning, the 2G stopped connecting, no icon and no data. They seem to have no idea what the problem is and no eta on repair.

Review of Twidroid twitter app

I have been using Twidroid as long as I have been using twitter.  I have also installed the plugin for adding your location to a tweet.  I have settled into using it more than I use Swift.  I find it to solid functional software. I have not found any bugs in it myself.  The only issue that I have is the size of the application.  At over 1 meg, it takes up a lot of space in storage for what it does. For a user on a stock G1, progam space is a very limited resource.  Since I have rooted my phone and the rom I prefer automatically uses apps2sd, I do not have this space issue.

I would recommend Twidroid if you have the space or run a rom that works around that issue.  Otherwise take a real close look at Swift, which seems to work just as well except for the geolocation.

Review of Swift twitter app

I have decided I should write some reviews of the apps that I check out on my phone.  I am going to start with the twitter client called Swift.

Overall it is a nice, small app for twitter.  The interface is nice to work with once a person discovers the bar on top with your username is a menu. With features including the ability to search for other users, search all twitter, following and unfollowing, it does most of what you can do from a computer.

On the down side, the notification does not indicate how many new messages there are and it does not have the ability to include location in a tweet.

I am currently switching back and forth between this app and Twidroid for my twitter needs.  I will write a review of Twidroid later.

a word of caution about the G1 dev tools app

I just spent a hour and half recovering my phone after I enabled a setting that put the phone into a boot loop.

I am glad that I had a BART backup from the last time I did a rom upgrade.  I ended up wiping all data and restoring the backup, then reapplying the latest update.  I still need to replace the Contacts.apk with the latest one.  Without Amon-Ra's custom recovey rom I would have ended up without a working phone until I got back home.

It is definitely work keeping the base defanged rom and the update I am currently using on the sd card.

For more information about G1 customization go to the xda developers forums.

Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro on a T-Mobile Wing

I sitting here looking at a T-Mobile Wing that my nephew installed a windows mobile 6.5 rom on.  It even has the Touch-Flo interface on it.  It does work, but is too slow to do much with.  They sent it to me to "fix" it.  It seems he could not figure out how to put the stock rom back.  I am heading to my computer now to see how much it will take to put it back.

Sound system tutorial

This afternoon I met with a member of the church a/v team and walked him through the basics of the sound system.  He now knows enough to do the basics without damaging the system.

I need to look at the calendar and find a couple of times to schedule training sessions and a regular schedule for the team to meet.

Testing another blogger client

I am posting this with a different blogger client for my T-Mobile G1 called Blogaway.  It allows labels but does not seem to allow editing of old posts.

This looks promising, except for the lack of editing old posts.  It does have an option to include geotagging.

Done dealing with the HP TC1100

Today I shipped the tablet back to my sister-in-law for her son. After I got xp tablet installed and all the updates, it is a nice little unit. The battery is doing ok, lasting over an hour and a half with wifi on. It should work ok for a high school student.
